Hook up generators to exercise equipment

When oh when will all the kinetic energy generated in gyms by people exercising be harnessed as electricity, if only just to light the gym or recharge ipods or cell phones? Here‘s an interesting take on the economics of the question from the BBC’s website. And there’s this, also from the BBC’s site, about harnessing the energy from heavily foot-trafficked floors or the vibrations from train or car traffic. A group called The Vibes Project is working on this. Also the U.S. Navy is at least looking into energy scavenging. And here‘s an idea about a gadget to fit in shoes to harvest energy.
